Edman: Injury woe

Wigan Athletic left-back Erik Edman faces up to six months out after the club confirmed the Sweden international ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament to his left knee during Saturday's 3-1 defeat at Blackburn.

The injury means Edman will miss out on Sweden's Euro 2008 campaign, but Wigan have let the former Tottenham player travel down to London to meet up with the Sweden national team doctors who are in the capital ahead of their clash with Brazil.

The news comes as a huge blow for the Latics as the 29-year-old has been in impressive form since he joined the club from Rennes in the January transfer window.

Latics boss Steve Bruce has admitted it was a major blow to lose Edman, but has backed the player to make a full recovery.

"It's a real shame because Eric has looked so natural and we will certainly miss him," Steve Bruce told the club's official website.

"He's also a lovely lad and a terrific professional but he'll get over this and be back for us, I'm sure."
