Beckham: Historic night in Paris

Former England boss Glenn Hoddle believes David Beckham is fit enough to ensure his international career does not stall on 100 caps.

Beckham is all set to reach the landmark century of appearances for his country on Wednesday when England face France at Stade de France.

The LA Galaxy star has convinced Fabio Capello that he is worthy of inclusion for now, but just how long he remains on the international scene is subject to conjecture.

Doubts have been cast as to whether playing in the MLS will give him the competitive edge needed for playing on the highest stage but Hoddle remains a huge admirer of the man he handed an international debut.

Hoddle is confident Beckham can make the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and still be playing for his country at 40; providing Capello can devise a role that will best utilise his talent.

New role?

"David Beckham has the ability to continue to play at the highest level until he is 40 and he can make the World Cup team in 2010, but I would play him in a completely different role," Hoddle told the Daily Express.

"I would like to see him as the deepest of three in central midfield, where he would have the time and the space on the ball where he could be an asset - an asset that England has never had.

"It gives England greater flexibility, a wider range of choices, but I don't see David Beckham's England career ending on 100 caps."

Ash Garford (Peterborough United fan) says...

Get him in at right back!! He knows how to defend, plus right back wouldnt be as demanding on his fitness as he gets older (not that his fitness has even been a problem), plus he would also be on the pitch for all dead ball situations. He is perfect for that position, and I honestly believe he can make it his own regular starting position.
