Bentley: To be rewarded

John Williams insists Blackburn Rovers have no intention of cashing in on David Bentley.

The winger has recently been linked with a move to Liverpool after enjoying a fine season at Ewood Park.

He is under contract at Rovers until 2011 and has been holding talks regarding an improvement on his current deal.

But he intimated over the weekend that he may have to assess his options, if he is to play European football reguarly and establish himself as England's first choice on the right flank.

Rovers chairman Williams did not comment directly on the rumours of a potential exit for Bentley, but stressed the club's wish to agree a new contract with the 23-year-old.

Fantastic progress

"David Bentley is under contract to Blackburn Rovers until 2011 and in recognition of the fantastic progress he has made this season, it is common knowledge that we are looking to extend it," Williams told the Lancashire Evening Telegraph.

"There's nothing more to say."

Blackburn manager Mark Hughes has also recently confirmed that the club will not be under any pressure to sell Bentley in the summer.
