Manchester City boss Sven Goran Eriksson has confirmed that he almost landed Nicolas Anelka in January.

Anelka joined Chelsea from Bolton in a £15million deal but Eriksson admits he almost lured the striker back to the City of Manchester Stadium - where he had spent two-and-half years previously under Kevin Keegan.

"It was close," said Eriksson.

"Anelka was very high on our list because he's a great footballer, the complete player in many ways - pace, strength, technique and he scores goals.

"But then Chelsea came in and it was difficult to compete with them.

"Unfortunately we have to accept that, for a footballer, if you have the choice between Chelsea and City you will choose Chelsea right now.

"In a couple of years maybe not, but that's the way it is right now."
