Kevin Davies slots home Bolton's winner against West Ham

Bolton boss Gary Megson sang the praises of Kevin Davies after the striker inspired his side to a vital 1-0 win over West Ham.

Davies scored the winner but terrorised the Hammers' defence for the entire 90 minutes in a man-of-the-match performance.

Megson's counterpart Alan Curbishley was left to bemoan Davies' physical style but the Bolton boss was delighted with his striker's display.

"He puts in some fantastic performances for us," said Megson. "When everything clicks he's as good as anything in the country and I'm delighted he's the one that got the goal; he was magnificent today.

"He played really well, won a lot of headers and was a threat throughout. People tend to think he does not get as many goals as he should so I was pleased he got one today.

"In fact he could have got three or four goals but his performance epitomised the effort the whole side put in."

The one downside for Megson was Davies' booking which rules him out of two of Wanderers' final four games in their run-in.

Disappointment

"It's a disappointment for us. The actual yellow he got did not warrant a yellow but there's always going to be physical contact and that's his game," said the Bolton boss.

The win takes Bolton to within two points of Birmingham at the foot of the Premier League and Megson was happy with the way his side went about their task as they won their first game in 11.

"They were about it from minute one. No one can ask anymore from them as regards effort; they've never been found wanting in terms of effort.

"It's closed the gap on Birmingham and Reading and from our point of view it's good Fulham won as they are still battling to stay in the Premiership and have other clubs in and around us to play.

"We are in there with a shout of getting out of it now and that's all we can ask for."
