Dutch coach Erwin Koeman has been named as the new manager of the Hungarian national team.

He replaces Peter Varhidi who has been sacked after failing to guide Hungary to Euro 2008.

The president of the Hungarian Football Association (MLSZ) Istvan Kisteleki confirmed the appointment on Thursday.

"MLSZ has dismissed Peter Varhidi as national team coach and decided to replace him with Dutchman Erwin Koeman," he said.

Koeman will officially take up the role on 1st May.

The former midfielder is the elder brother of former Valencia boss Ronald Koeman and has previous experience of management from a two-year spell at Feyenoord between 2005 and 2007.

Despite being relieved of his duties after 18 months in charge, Varhidi has offered to help the new manager, should his assistance be required.
