Steven Gerrard believes Liverpool have all the ingredients to mount a serious title challenge next season.

The Reds saw their title tilt fade away again after a bright start to the campaign when they led the table in September.

Liverpool finished in fourth spot 11 points adrift of champions Manchester United, but Gerrard believes that under Rafa Benitez and the quality of players at Anfield they can finally end their 18-year wait for the championship.

"Obviously I have to be careful that I don't send expectations through the roof again, but for me I am desperate for it," Gerrard told the club's official website.

Believe

"I believe in this team and this manager, and believe we can make it happen. We need help and new players, and the manager needs help from the board to make these signings happen and make us stronger.

"I do expect us to be involved next season."

Signings
Gerrard knows Liverpool must bolster their squad in the summer, but he feels the spine is there to challenge the likes of United, Chelsea and Arsenal.

The Reds skipper says he has been assured by Benitez that Liverpool will be making quality additions in the summer.

"He doesn't call me in and tell me names but he does assure me and the other players that if anyone becomes available who would strengthen the side then he'll go out and buy them," added Gerrard.

"If you look at the quality we have down the spine, it is fantastic. We have other good players as well though."
