Pedro Mendes was delighted to help Portsmouth secure their first FA Cup triumph since 1939.

The Portuguese midfielder put in a commanding performance during Pompey's 1-0 victory over Cardiff on Saturday.

The former Tottenham and Porto star admitted that to be involved in such an occasion was a huge honour, and a fitting climax to a promising season.

Dream

"It's a fantastic day for everyone, for the players, for the staff and for the fans," Mendes told Sky Sports News. "It's a dream come true to be fair.

"At the start of the season we wanted to go as far as possible in this competition and to get to the semi-finals at Wembley and win, and then the final, it's really a dream come true.

"I think it is an achievement to celebrate because winning the FA Cup and not being one of the big four teams is really a great achievement."

Support

Mendes was also delighted to have been handed the opportunity to play at Wembley, and praised the support the travelling Pompey fans gave them inside the historic venue.

"It's an unbelievable stadium, playing in front of 90,000 people and so many of our fans," he said.

"Our supporters did fantastic and were always behind us all the way."
