Mark Schwarzer has turned down a new contract at Middlesbrough and signed for Premier League rivals Fulham.

Boro had offered fresh terms to the veteran Australian, who had spent 11-years at The Riverside.

Skysports.com understands there was a two-year offer on the table from the Teesside club - but Schwarzer has opted for a move to Craven Cottage.

"I thought it was important to sort it out sooner rather than later so it didn't affect preparations for the qualifiers," said Schwarzer as he arrived in Australia ahead of their friendly with Ghana.

"I was very confident something would be sorted out. I had a few other options but felt this was the best one for me.

"I don't think anyone can say anything negative about my stay at Middlesbrough, I fulfilled every contract I had with them."

Schwarzer, 35, had been linked with the likes of Bayern Munich, Juventus, Fiorentina and Celtic - but he has opted to remain in the Premier League.
