Jones: Knee injury
Kenwyne Jones is heading back to Sunderland for further tests on a knee injury sustained in action for Trinidad and Tobago.
The 23-year-old suffered suspected ligament damage in a clash with England goalkeeper David James during a friendly international on Sunday.
Jones underwent a scan in the Caribbean on Monday but Sunderland have now requested that he be allowed to return to England.
A club spokesman said: "Kenwyne is returning to Sunderland and the nature of his injury will be assessed by the club's medical team."
Some reports have claimed the striker will be sidelined for up to two months, meaning he may have to sit out the start of the new Premier League season.
Meanwhile, Sunderland have announced their retained list for the start of the new season and confirmed the departures of Ian Harte, Stephen Wright, Andy Cole and Stanislav Varga.
The quartet were all told by manager Roy Keane last month that they did not figure in his plans for the future and are now free to find new clubs.
Dwight Yorke remains in talks with the club over a new deal as he reaches the end of his current contract, with Keane eager to keep the 36-year-old at the Stadium of Light.
Liam Miller has been retained despite being placed on the transfer list in February for poor timekeeping, as he fought his way back into the side towards the end of the season.
Jonny Evans has returned to Manchester United following the end of his loan spell but Keane has made no secret of his desire to bring the Northern Ireland international back to Wearside.
Spanish midfielder Arnau, who spent last season on loan at Falkirk, will return to the club for the start of pre-season training, while Graham Kavanagh, Russell Anderson and Greg Halford, who were also sent out on loan, remain under contract.
Keane is currently in New Zealand as part of his Uefa Pro Licence coaching course and he has been spending time with All Blacks coach Graham Henry.
Henry said: "Everybody knows him and respects him for what he has done in sport and it's great that he chose, along with (Wellington Phoenix coach) Ricki Herbert, to be here with the All Blacks as part of their requirements for their final coaching certificate in football."
