Ronaldo breaks silence

Man United winger admits he desires Real move

Last updated: 5th June 2008

Cristiano Ronaldo has broken his silence over his future by reportedly declaring a desire to move to Real Madrid.

The transfer story of the summer gathers pace by the day but prior to speaking to Brazilian website Terra, little of note had been offered by the Manchester United winger.

Sir Alex Ferguson and United's owners, the Glazer family, are united in their stance that Ronaldo will not be allowed to quit Old Trafford but their resolve to keep him will now be further tested by the player's latest declaration.

Speaking from Portugal's training base in the Swiss city of Neuchatel, Ronaldo admitted, according to Terra, that a move to the Spanish capital appealed.

"I want to play for Real Madrid, but only if it is true they are eager to pay me and Manchester United what they have been saying they will," said Ronaldo.

Message received

"However, it does not depend on me. It is important to send a message.

"From now on I will not talk again about this until the end of the Euros. It is not worth asking me because I will not reply."

On Wednesday, Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon said he would not risk ruining his club's relationship with Manchester United by bidding for a player under contract.

However, now Ronaldo has signalled his intent for a future in Spain, it could be Madrid that make the next move.

Man Utd have never depended on just one player. It has always been about the squad. Nobody is bigger than the team, nobody is bigger than the game. If he wants to go then let him.

I believe that Ronaldo wanted out of England since the last world cup but no offers came in for him from Real Madrid. He has never tried to hide the fact that his heart lies in Madrid.I dont think its anything to do with Man Utd as the world over knows they are a great team. After his perfomances last season for United he was always going to be known as the so called Best player in the world and Real always want the players with that tag.It was always a case of when rather than if he signs for Madrid. I think Utd should cash in now because i dont think he will never have another season like last in the Premier League. They will get big big money for him at present which will go afar in improving their squad. I think it is England he dislikes and unfortuatnaly for United they play in England. United fans shouldnt worry as they were great before Ronaldo and will be great after his departure. At the end of this season they will not know hes gone. They will replace him hes only one player and it takes eleven to make a great team. Look at Arsenal when Henry left its exactly the same scenario!!! Let him go now the speculation will never stop. It will only affect other players and results in the long run.

From the moment Ronaldo signed for us it was obvious that he didn't really care about the club. The boy oozes arogance and his desired move to real is about him creating his own legacy, which is quite self obsessive. No matter what real offer we shouldn't sell to them, otherwise their bully-boy tactics will be proven to work. Im sure Barca would be after him. Other than that, he can rot in the reserves for 4 years. We don't need the money. we've just got £80 million from the champions league, and £14 million from the premier league. As For FIFA's farcical decision to say that Real have done nothing wrong, it just shows that officials, and organisations on the continent really don't like English football and the success our league is at the moment. Even they want to see Ronaldo at Real Madrid. They deny Man Utd's complaint, then at the same time ask the Spanish FA to monitor Real. I'm sure thats going to work, thats like chelsea tapping up a player, and then asking abramovich to monitor the situation

Ronaldo is undoubtedly the best player around. Definitely he wouldnt be the last. I agree with all those who think united should allow him to go. We all know that Real buy big names who manage to bring in money but not trophies. They have been very poor in the champions league which is the ultimate. We all know that big names do not always perform! United is BIGGER than Ronaldo and for that matter any player and would forever remain that way. Fergie wants to defend the English title and the UEFA CL and he knows that Ronaldo would be an integral part if he is to suceed to equal liverpools success. There are more players whom he can relly on. I believe Selling Ronaldo should include additional players like Sergio Ramos who i admire so much and would like to have him at United's right back plus 80 million pounds.(that is if he decides to leave OT) Ronaldo would never be the favourite as the likes of Raul. He would not get his favourite number 7 jersey too. But i would wish him all the best if he wants to go

There are a handful of "super clubs" in Europe, namely Barca, Real Madrid, Juventus, Milan, Man Utd, Chelsea and Arsenal. However it clearly stands out that Man U and Arsenal conduct themselves in the most dignified and professional manner. (Maybe AC Milan also). That is why they both have maintained their managers for such a long time with consistent success. They both seem to place player welfare, the concept of "team", trust, respect and loyalty higher than money. It breeds integrity, professionalism and success and the money no doubt follows. It can hardly be said of the likes of Chelsea, Barca or Real who attempt to buy Championships with outrageous spending and who will sack players and managers if immediate success is not achieved. If Sir Alex and the board could get rid of Roy Keane, who IS the most influential player for UTD in the Premiership era for disciplinary reasons it shows that they are true professionals. If Ronaldo thinks he will be moving to a better club and organisation then he is sadly mistaken. No club, and i repeat NO club in the world has the set-up, infrastructure and character to better look after a player and guarantee success like Man Utd. So if this is what Ronaldo thinks then let him see just how green the grass is on the other side. And lets not get carried away here. Ronaldo is brilliant but has only showed this level of consistency for two years now. He may end up being the greatest player of all time. But until he can produce the magic for 10-12 years like Ryan Giggs he will never be held in the same esteem. Utd have lost stars such as Cantona, Beckham, Peter Schmeichel, Van Nistleroy, Stam etc and it has never stopped us from acheiving success. No doubt Ronaldo will be missed, just like Beckham and co, but the Man Utd is a world wide institution and no ONE player is bigger than this club. So go if you want Ronnie but know that it takes more than skill to make you great!

If the offer for Ronaldo is £75 million bite their hands off United have a knack for getting the next Big thing . Will Ronaldo have another season like last year? I dont think so. Spend some of the money on another striker, and let Anderson Nani and Hargreaves run the show

I love Man Utd and Ronaldo. He may be the best player in the (at the moment) but United are the best team in the world and will be for many years to come. If he stayed he would become a legend his choice. I think Nani and Anderson are going to be every bit as good as him. Also Utd can not moan too much as we have just snatched Davide Petrucci from Roma and they are furious and he is rated as the new Totti. It happens players come and go, let him go and buy Messi.

I think Mr Ronaldo has shown a total lack of respect from the very start of this is or isn't he going saga. He says he wants to stay and win more trophies for United, now all this media attention he suddenly doesn't know what to do. He's playing everyone for a fool. In my opinion he has not had a good EURO 2008. I feel he is holding back. No disrespect to his talent but its not the same Cristiano Ronaldo most people have enjoyed watching this season.

Am I the only one sick listening to and about whether Christiano Ronaldo is going or staying? This is exactly what him, his agent and whoever else involved with him wants. As far as im concerned and I know I speak for all premier league fans not just Man U supporters, that he is playing in the best league in the world!! If he wants to leave let him...its his loss. Just look at Anelka when he left Arsenal....he done it and regreted it...my guess is that if Ronaldo does it, he will too!!

Phil Abrahams (Tottenham Hotspur fan) says...

Surely all this 'Will he go' 'Won't he go', and 'Talk now 'Talk after the Euros' is premature! He's further inciting things by not commenting until 'after the Euros', when all it needs is a brief Yes or No. Only last year he signed a new 5 year contract, which boosted his income considerably, this after similiar speculation. He should be made to honour the contract he signed and not hold Man Utd to ransom. Man Utd should stand firm and not give in to this emotional blackmail?

I was a fan of Ronaldo, but after looking at his interest for Real Madrid, i think he should go to Real because that would be for his benefit. Manchester United is surely a good team but now they have nothing to provide Ronaldo with any motivation as such to stay. Players like anderson and nani are still in manu but they would need time to settle and i dont think they would be as great as ronaldo is in like 2 or 3 years time, but who knows. I support Ronaldo in going to Real and Manchester United shoulndt act like this. i am dissapointed in their behaviour. Go Ronaldo, you have a lot to show the world!.

If Ronaldo wants to go let him go it shouldnt matter about the money if anything instead of paying him all this money why not donate it to the nhs or charity at least something worth while they could probably get a lot more use out of it Ronaldo is a shambles he is disloyal and doesnt deserve to play football one bad tackle and hes done anyway what happened to the good old days when players played for there badge and not for there pay packet if you ask me money has ruined football alltogether.

Harvy Singh (Manchester United fan) says...

He thinks he is bigger than United, so we should sell him after the euros, get 100m out of him and get the best players in the world. He is a disgrace to his team mates, fans, the club and Sir Alex Ferguson who has looked after him and made him what he is. We should beat City and sign Dinho as well as get a host of other players and forget about Cristiano. We all know how much United fans loved him and he knew that, but there's no chance he will be on the field next season. He will get boo's and whistles and once he does go to madrid he will see what those fans are about. They don't care about the players, they just care about trophys and are way too big headed. Look at how they trated Ronaldo in his first few years at madrid. I'm surprised he stayed there with fans like that.

This Ronaldo affair is growing out of proportion. We, United fans should remember that no one is indispensable in this world. Ironically 2008 marked the 50th anniversary of the Munich tragedy which robbed us of so many talents.Yet like the phoenix Manutd rose out of its ashes. That boy Ronaldo whom we forgave for the despicable gesture which saw the red card sending Rooney out of the last World Cup should remember that this club has seen so many semi gods tread on the OT turf like Roy Kean, David Bekham, Rood Van Nistelroy and last but not least the King Eric Cantona and yet each one for different reasons left for "greener pastures".But please, Ronaldo do it gracefully. You see Roy Kean, Cantona and even Bekham can come back to OT and get cheered by the fans. When you came to Manutd you were such an immature selfish though talented player. You did not know the value of an assist. You did not score many goals as well because no one would like to pass the ball to a selfish narcissistic young lad just landed. Sir Alex, it was who made you grow into the player you are now about to be named World Footballer of the year. You are free to go to Real Madrid and hopefully you might cross swords with Manutd in the CL next season. But I would advise you to ask your then Manager not to pick you for the OT match. The same fans who this season chanted "That boy Ronaldo" will not doubt create another song for the day, like " That cheat Ronaldo"

I totally agree that Ronaldo should be allowed to leave. We adore him out here but since he is more interested in satisfying his greed then let him leave. There are great players out there. After all Ronaldo would have cost us the CL because of his pride. As to the possibility of signing Messi I have my doubts because he is a very loyal and decent Human Being.

As an older generation football fan- Stood at the Stretford End watching Best, Law, Charlton etc-I always admired Real Madrid as a club and never begrudged them their success.. However I have now lost all respect for them and am very disapointed in Ronaldo as a person as he should have committed himself to United from the start. Don't contracts and integrity/loyalty mean anything anymore? How Madrid can say there is no proof of what Alex accuses them of is beyond belief. The proof is there everytime they open their mouths!

I will be sorry to see Ronaldo go but if he wants to go then let him.... He can play out in Spain and become a loser as he wont win much there as there league is rubbish compared with the Premiership. So lets us remember there are other players in the squad not just one person. So good by Ronaldo and dont come back........

as a man-u supporter i think all the hype about ronaldo is unfounded and a disgrace but i will say if the boy wants to go let him go he is not bigger than man-uwe have had bettter than him and there is better to come he has shown no loyalty to his team mates nor the united ppl who have looked after him these 5 years so go and good luck to him we will live on after hes gone so pack his bags for him and show him the door

I've always been a die-hard Ronaldo & Man Utd fan, but at this moment i feel Man Utd shud just chuck him where ever he wants 2 go and demand 80 or 100 million. Then smartly use that money to buy the best players in the world. That should teach 'em all a lesson and shut everyone's mouths. Man Utd is a legacy, an institution. They have always been the best club in the world even before Ronaldo joined, so they don't need to be at anyone's mercy. Throw him out or let him rot elsewhere! Get new players with the sell-out money! Hail United!
