Capello: Selection warning

National team coach Fabio Capello has warned his England stars he has no qualms about dropping big-name players.

The likes of Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and Wayne Rooney were virtually guaranteed starters under previous boss Steve McClaren but Capello insists they must earn their place in each of his England squads.

The Italian recalled David Beckham against France in March despite the former England captain now playing in the US for LA Galaxy, although Capello made it clear the ex-Real Madrid star had to prove his fitness before being selected.

"I always make decisions based on fitness and form alone," he said.

Quality

"I never choose a player because of the name. I choose based on the group and the quality - not the name.

"If I choose the player it's because I think they are the best players, the very best at the moment. And I will have no problems in leaving anyone out."

Capello's warning is sure to keep his players on their toes as England prepare to open their 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign later this year.

"I am very confident we will qualify," he added. "We have a very good squad with very good players. I have a lot of confidence."
