Manchester United assistant manager Carlos Queiroz hopes the club's 'affection' for Cristiano Ronaldo will be enough to ensure he remains at Old Trafford.

Ronaldo's future at United remains in severe doubt following Real Madrid's ongoing pursuit of the two-time PFA Players' Player of the Year.

The 23-year-old has yet to indicate where he sees his footballing future, but an official announcement from the player is expected within the next 48 hours.

If Ronaldo declares his desire to make a summer move to Spain, Real are expected to launch a record-breaking offer for his services - but the reported fee in the region of €100million (£80million) has been played down by president Ramon Calderon.

Very special

Red Devils coach Queiroz, however, is hopeful that Ronaldo will remain at the side he signed for from Sporting Lisbon in 2003.

"Manchester United is very special," Queiroz told Portuguese radio station Renascenca.

"Because of that we know how to surround Cristiano completely with all the affection and all the attention he deserves.

"However, not speaking is the most sensible course of action at this moment, so that we don't contribute to a less than positive spectacle and so we don't aid those whose interests are difficult to identify."

Queiroz is also remaining coy over reports linking him with the Portugal manager's job following Luiz Felipe Scolari's departure to Chelsea.

Portugal job

"I'm not going to put myself on the market," Queiroz continued.

"Because the decision on the national coach should not be a result of those who make themselves candidates, but a decision that is conscious, rational and based on what the Federation judges is necessary for the team.

"I'm not going to tell you whether or not I'm contacted, that way I know for sure that it will be dealt with in due form and in due place."
