Barry: Disciplined

Aston Villa have disciplined Gareth Barry after the captain criticised manager Martin O'Neill in a weekend interview.

Barry wants to quit Villa in order to join Liverpool, who have seen bids rejected by their Premier League rivals.

On Sunday, the midfielder again expressed his wish to move on this summer and accused O'Neill of not taking the time to discuss the situation.

O'Neill has subsequently admitted that he is prepared to sanction Barry's departure providing Liverpool meet Villa's asking price.

No truth

Reports have claimed that the Reds have made a final £15million offer, plus add-ons, in a bid to tempt Villa into a sale.

Villa boss O'Neill has denied receiving a fresh bid from Liverpool and has also confirmed Barry will be punished as a result of his outburst.

"There's no truth in this morning's reports and the situation remains the same," O'Neill told the club's official website.

"Gareth will not be returning to training tomorrow and he has been disciplined after giving an unauthorised interview to the News of the World."

What a sad end to what has been such a great career for Barry at villa. He has been a great servant to the club and as a fan I have sympathy with the fact he criticised o neil for having time to be a euro 2008 pundit but no time to discuss his future. I love MoN but he should have enough on his plate trying to get new faces in and not acting the goat with lineker and co. It will be really sad to see the shocking reception barry will get next season - he deserves so much better. Stop wasting time on this saga MoN, get shot of him and move onto to trying to bring in some GENUINE quality.

I feel sorry for Gareth. He clearly doesn't want to stay at Villa and they're trying to keep him there by putting too high of an asking price on him. Even some Villa fans seem to want him to just go and get them the cash now. Plus, here at Anfield if you ask fans would they want Barry at the cost of Alonso, 99% would say no. Admittedly he's a decent player and would do well for us, Villa or anyone else, but he isn't worth the ¿20-odd million that is being quoted.

I've lost a huge amount of respect for Gareth Barry,i understand his wish to play Champions League football NOW but the way this whole ordeal has been dealt with, mainly by Liverpool! is unacceptable,it's sad in a way because Gareth is a talented footballer & loved by the Villa fans but after this it will be severely damaged,i stand by Martin O'Neill in this,i know Villa's game with Liverpool at Villa park is gonna by very interesting!
