Craig Gordon believes Sunderland should be looking to challenge for a place in the top half of the Premier League.

The Black Cats finished 15th in their first year back in the top flight but Gordon is excited about the new campaign.

He does not believe it will be any harder than last term and feels Sunderland should not be worrying about relegation.

Instead, Gordon wants the club to move in the right direction and is confident of putting pressure on the teams in mid-table.

"I'm not sure it will be more difficult," the Scottish goalkeeper told Sky Sports News.

"I think it will be a challenge for us, but we've got to set our sights a bit higher than that this season.

"We've got to look to break into that group of clubs just above that and steer well clear of relegation and push for the top half of the league."

Gordon was also pleased with the development of his own game last season and now expects to make further progress.

He added: "It was a good experience last season and because of that I expect to be better this season."
