Ferdinand: Behind schedule

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is keen for Rio Ferdinand to secure some playing time against Orlando Pirates on Tuesday.

The England international was set to feature against Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday after missing their pre-season opener against Aberdeen.

However, a back spasm forced him out of the 1-1 draw against The Chiefs and Ferguson has now admitted Ferdinand is now lagging behind in the preparation stakes.

"I will make some changes for the next match because we have to give everyone some minutes on the clock, Rio Ferdinand in particular," he said.

Fit to play

"He missed the game at Aberdeen and is behind schedule in terms of games. But I would like to think he will be fit to take part on Tuesday."

Meanwhile, Ferguson reserved special praise for Gary Neville, who has missed the last 16 months of action through injury, after he featured for an hour against The Chiefs.

"Gary's enthusiasm and speed of play was quite phenomenal. I am very pleased and he is a remarkable man," he continued.

"Anyone who has played football knows that when you get to your 30s and been out of the game for 16 months, your comeback is very, very difficult. You have to give him a lot of credit."
