Middlesbrough midfielder Lee Cattermole is on the brink of joining Wigan after the two clubs agreed a fee.

The Latics lodged a bid of £3.5million with Boro earlier on Wednesday after their original offer of £2.5million was rejected last week.

Middlesbrough have now given Wigan permission to speak with the 20-year-old.

Cattermole is set to seal a move to the JJB Stadium subject to a medical and agreeing personal terms.

Gareth Southgate had already stated that he would not stand in Cattermole's way as he could not be guaranteed first-team football.

Wigan have been busy strengthening their squad this week and on Tuesday they completed the loan signing of Egyptian striker Amr Zaki.

They have also made an approach to Fulham over the possibility of re-signing Jimmy Bullard.
