Bournemouth have handed a trial to former England defender Chris Powell following his release from Charlton.

The 38-year-old was not offered a new deal at The Valley and is looking for a new club.

Cherries boss Kevin Bond believes that Powell's experience will help his young squad and he could replace Warren Cummings, who had a transfer request granted last week.

Interest

"This is definitely a here and now short-term situation if it were to happen," Bond told the Daily Echo.

"I've got two young boys potentially who are going to be playing centre-half, with potentially a young goalkeeper, so you are undoubtedly going to need some experience around them.

"He's such a good professional, he's a fitness fanatic, he's not a drinker and he's such a good influence that I just thought it was too good an opportunity for us to pass up."

Powell, who played five times for England under Sven-Goran Eriksson, will sit out Bournemouth's friendly with Bristol City on Saturday but could feature against Dorchester next Tuesday.
