Hughes: Keen to keep Johnson

Manchester City boss Mark Hughes has confirmed the club are in talks with Michael Johnson over a new deal.

As revealed by skysports.com City have offered the England Under 21 international a bumper new five-year contract to ward off interest from other clubs.

Hughes is hopeful Johnson will sign the new deal on offer and has tipped him to break into the full England squad in the future.

"Contract discussions are taking place and we certainly want Michael to stay," said Hughes.

Outstanding

"He is an outstanding young player with a great talent and a great future ahead of him and we want that future to be at City. So we are working to that end.

"We have all been impressed with what he has shown so far and I am sure he will be an England regular for years to come.

"Michael needs to keep working but we can help him. We want him to be the best he can be because he has all the right qualities.

"He won't find anywhere better to develop than here. He understands where the club wants to go and I am sure he wants to be part of it."
