Steed Malbranque is undergoing a medical at Sunderland ahead of a proposed move to the Stadium of Light, according to Sky Sports News.
The Black Cats have already secured deals for Teemu Tainio and Pascal Chimbonda after bidding for four Tottenham players earlier in the month.
Younes Kaboul remains a target for a number of other Premier League clubs, but Sunderland now look set to complete the capture of Malbranque.
The Frenchman has already discussed personal terms with manager Roy Keane and is now in the process of finalising his transfer.
If he passes his medical he could be expected to put pen-to-paper on a deal in the next 24 hours.
Malbranque spent two years at Tottenham after joining from Fulham in 2006, and last season he was a regular on the left of midfield.
