Ruud van Nistelrooy does not expect to be playing alongside Cristiano Ronaldo at Real Madrid next season.

The Spanish giants' former Manchester United striker has seen speculation over Ronaldo's future dominate the sporting agenda this summer.

And the Holland international believes Real's preparations for the new campaign have been affected by the ongoing saga.

Sir Alex Ferguson is adamant that the Portuguese phenomenon will not be leaving Old Trafford, but that has not stopped Real in their very public pursuit.

Coach Bernd Schuster was the latest to speak on the subject on Saturday when he claimed that they have not given up hope of luring Ronaldo to the Bernabeu.

Over the top

Van Nistelrooy has revealed how his team-mates are becoming a little weary of being pushed out of the spotlight by the constant speculation.

"It got a bit too far maybe, it is such an issue at the moment in Spain. It gets a bit over the top," Van Nistelrooy told Radio 5 Live.

"A couple of our players, they made the comment that there was only talk about him and not about the current team and stars, and everybody's waiting for the next rumour without anything concrete."

Asked whether he expected Ronaldo to stay at Old Trafford for the forthcoming campaign, the Dutchman added: "I think so, if you hear the statements from United.

"It doesn't really sound like they'll let him go."
