Robinho: Chelsea-bound?

Chelsea have confirmed they have lodged a bid for Real Madrid forward Robinho.

Sky Sports News broke the news earlier on Thursday and are of the understanding a £19.7million offer has been made.

Chelsea boss Luiz Felipe Scolari has made no secret of his desire to link-up with his Brazilian compatriot and now the Blues have upped the transfer ante.

"Further to media reports, Chelsea Football Club can confirm we have made an offer to Real Madrid today (Thursday, August 7) for the transfer of Robinho," read a statement on the club's official website.

Earlier this week Robinho refused to rule out a move to Stamford Bridge, while Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon has openly declared the club's interest in the player.

Real Madrid have repeatedly expressed a desire to keep the South American in the Spanish capital but the recent signing of Rafael van der Vaart does give them amble cover in Robinho's position, even when taking into account Wesley Sneijder's injury troubles.

Robinho was thought to be unsettled by talk he could be used as a makeweight in Madrid's bid to land Cristiano Ronaldo, a deal which has now been shelved.

Chelsea earlier this month conceded their bid to sign Robinho would be their last of the summer should it prove successful.

I admire Robinho, but I do not see much difference between him and Aryen Robben. While Robben was a good asset to Chelsea, he was also prone to injuries due to the fact that he loves holding the ball and dribbling for too long before releasing the ball to the his team makes and this practice attracts hard tackles (which are most times overlooked by the referees) from many defenders in the premiership - ask Robin Van Persie of Arsenal. I therefore wonder, if Robinho can make a greater impact in Chelsea than Robben. Thank you.

I wish this final bid will work out because Robinho is a creative player with dribbling skills, with him and host of other players already in the squad I think we are in for good football and winings cos its going to be merciless team which every team willwatch out for,.

Another Shevchenko in the making? Call me a skeptic, but I reckon that Robinho is fine the way and the place he is. Chelsea already have a fine attacking force and why change that just because the manager 'likes' him. They'll keep playing him because that's what the fans want, bench Drogba, use Anelka as support, then Chelsea would've lost their greatest player that's come their way since Zola.

I believe Robinho would be a great asset to Chelsea if the deal sees the light of the day. His skills combined with Drogba's strenght would leave any opponent sprawling. Dont forget the fact that he has age on his side. So with the likes of Deco and Essien providing the passes, the rest would be history. In any case, let's see how it would work, because he will also need time to settle.

Would be a good signing but where would he fit in? Yes, SWP and Malouda have to go but what about Kalou, Cole, Ballack? Ballack was arguably our best player last season and Cole wasn't far behind! Kalou is going to be an immense talent too. Also we're risking losing young players like Scott Sinclair too.

Chelsea are crazy in their pursuit of the worlds best players. Any decent manager can win quite a few trophies with half the names that chelsea have within their ranks. They waste quite a few good players which other clubs can only hope of possessing i.e. Shawn Wright Philips, Andre Shivchenko and this year maybe even the likes of Lampard or Essien will be quite familiar with the subs bench. Unbelieveable!!!! However when youve got it you flaunt it! and Robinho is too good a player too miss out on! Definately a great BUY!

Robinho is just what we need up front i can see him forming a formidable strike partnership with Droba or Anelka. Look out Man U were coming for you!!

Everything that can be, has been crossed. I hope we get him as he will for sure be the icing on an already great cake. Scolari is a great admirer of the player once saying he had the raw ability to be the best...ever.... A comment agreed with by Pele, who oversaw his development as a young lad in Santos' youth programme. If he comes and Scolari gets the best out of him we are looking at the only player in the prem' who could challenge Ronaldo for his crown. So come on Roman, dig deep and lets win all four......

I hope Robinho does move to the Premiership. Why is it that even though it is without doubt the best league in the world, players still want to leave it for clubs like Real, Milan and Barcelona? Why isn't Christiano Ronaldo content with being at Man United having just won consecutive titles and the Champions League? Why can't Premiership clubs usually get the REALLY BIG stars, players like Ronaldinho, Kaka, Ronaldo (the original one) Adriano, Messi when they are young and at their peak. The premiership is still seen, I reckon, as second best, as a stepping stone before moving to Spain or Italy or as a place to go when you're in your 30s and want a big fat pay cheque before retiring. Why?

Gregory Maclennan (Arsenal fan) says...

I'm a real Madrid fan and it would be a pity to see Robinho go but should it actually happen I recon Real Madrid will go into transfer madness overdrive and try buy any high ranking player with the funds received from the transfer from Chelsea added to the funds not spent on bringing Ronaldo to the club... Should he go I expect a big name signing to replace him and they probably have someone waiting in the wings just in case... It is pretty doubtful (outside of him putting in a transfer request) that Madrid will sell him as the current coach likes him a lot.

Hold on a minute!! What's going on with Chelsea's funds? I thought the "Chelsea Way" was to simply target a player and offer twice as much as he's valued to make sure they land him!!! They have done this with average players in the past. However, for a great player like Robinho they go and offer the bare minimum!!! Is it possible they have a limited cash fund this year??? Noooo..... surely!!!! Perhaps they are business concious after all!!! hmmmm... Strange!!!!

Hassan Al hassany says...

It's great that Chelsea are after a class player but I think too much has been advertised about this player by the Chelsea executives. This would justify Chelsea's strong desire to lure him in and Real can simply refuse, knowing that Chelsea will be then tempted to increase their bid. I don't think Chelsea should have publicly expressed their strong desire to land him. Nevertheless, I hope the deal goes by and he would be a great addition to our strong squad.

Aaron Mcintosh (Manchester United fan) says...

If that turns out to be the figure that has been bid then Chelsea will have no chance of getting him for that. Robinho is a highly rated young player and Real Madrid we now know are not going be getting Cristiano Ronaldo, Arjen Robben is injury prone and so they need all the wide players they can get. Chelsea I would think would have to up that closer to the 25m mark if they are to have any chance of signing him

How ironic! The hunter becomes the hunted. It would be beautiful justice to see Real lose a top talent because of their arrogance in their pursuit of Cristiano Ronaldo. I hope that Chelsea are successful, the Premiership this year is going to be the best ever!!

Madrid is dead if they let Robinho go. Why would they let the one player whom I believe is the reason many of us from developing nations adore Real Madrid? We worshipped Zidane and Ronaldo and watched them leave but were glad that at least Robinho was there to put a smile to our faces. Take him away and what does Madrid have? No samba? no drumbeat? Barca without Ronaldinho? Madrid without Robinho? Tsk1 Tsk! I guess Milan and London take over as the epicenters of the beautiful game. If management at Real and Barca do not understand it, I am truly sorry. Messi will have little incentive to stay in Barcelona if he is not going to be surrounded by magicians who appreciate their magic. Why should C. Ronaldo want to leave Manchester when he plays with Nani, Roon, Revez and perhaps even Berbatov - these are magicians who make watching the game so much fun. its not always about just winning only. Its about winning and playing the beautiful game. it is about leaving us fans panting, drooping jaws and disbelief in our eyes when we watch some totally extraordinary footie. Madrid, do not let Robinho go and do everything to make him understand he is the heartbeat of the team and it dies without him

I think if we get him we will be complete and ready to win everything. The team is already amazing but we need a fowarg and I think Robinho would be the ideal person in either 4-4-2 or 4-3-3. With Drogba or Anelka in the middle of the front 3 and on the left Robinho and on the right Cole. Alternatively they could us a partnership of Robinho and either Drogba or Anelka. With the midfield we have 3 in Deco, Essien and Lampard(the best player in the world, not given enough credit though) or a 4 of Cole on the left, then Lampard, then Essien and Deco on the right. With 4 great subs in Ballack, Wright-Phillips, Mikel and Malouda. Then a perfect defence back with Cole, Carvalho, Terry and Bosingwa and once again amazing subs in Bridge, Alex and Ivanovic. The goalkeepers speak from themselves with Cech as our number one and the qualities of Cudicini and Hilario as our second and third keepers. In other words Robinho would finish the team off with style and flair. The extra striker is what we need and that is what he can be to make Chelsea the team that win by three or four goals every game and show the true class that is Chelsea.

This would be a huge advantage to Chelsea if they could land him. I can't see Real Madrid letting him go easy though...we'll see what happens.
