Lehmann: International retirement

The German football federation have announced that Jens Lehmann has retired from the international game.

Lehmann revealed last month that he had yet to decide whether to play on for Germany.

He has since held talks with manager Joachim Low and will now no longer be available for selection.

For much of his international career Lehmann was Oliver Kahn's deputy but he overtook his rival ahead of the 2006 World Cup.

Lehmann continued to be his country's first-choice goalkeeper at Euro 2008 and won the last of his 61 caps in the final defeat to Spain.

He left Arsenal at the end of last season to join Stuttgart and will play on at club level.

But Low must now consider other options for the role with Germany, and he has few experienced alternatives.

Robert Enke of Hannover and Bayer Leverkusen's Rene Adler have just one cap between them, while Valencia keeper Timo Hildebrand was left at home for Euro 2008.
