Vidic: Impressed by trio

Nemanja Vidic admits Manchester United's old guard continue to set the example for the rest of the squad.

Last season's Premier League and UEFA Champions League winners warmed up for the new campaign by lifting the Community Shield on Sunday.

Veteran trio Ryan Giggs, Gary Neville and Paul Scholes all started against Portsmouth, and Vidic expects the stalwarts to be influential in United's quest for more trophies.

"I hope the Community Shield won't be the last trophy we win this season," said Vidic.

Driven

"We've worked hard in pre-season and I've seen the hunger in the players' eyes.

"We are ready to win more trophies because there exists a winning mentality at United.

"Paul Scholes, Gary Neville and Ryan Giggs have been at the club for so many years, but they are still so driven to win trophies.

"We saw in the Community Shield that they are ready to fight for every ball. This pushes other players on.

"They set the example that the rest of us need to follow. They are important players for us."

Vidic is also confident that United will be able to cope without Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo for the start of the new Premier League season.

He added: "We have a big squad - everyone stayed over the summer - and maybe the boss will look to bring in one more player.

"We have missed Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo during pre-season, but against Portsmouth we saw that other players can fill their positions."
