John Terry is confident that Chelsea can shake off the nearly-men tag they inherited last season.

The Blues reached the final of the UEFA Champions League and Carling Cup, only to lose in both, while they also failed to wrench the Premier League title back from Manchester United, eventually finishing as runners-up.

Having replaced Avram Grant with World Cup winning coach Luiz Felipe Scolari this summer, as well as bringing in experienced Portugal internationals Jose Bosingwa and Deco, the Blues are expected to challenge on all fronts once again in the new term.

Their skipper admits that the disappointment of failing to get their hands on any silverware last season will help to spur the side on, and fully expects to lift at least one trophy in 2009.

"It's certainly given us more determination to go one step further in all competitions," the England international told Sky Sports News.

"We came so close in everything last year, but we've got a new manager, we've got some great signings, who look very good, who I think can strengthen the side and push us on to another level.

"Hopefully we can get some silverware back at the Bridge."
