Cole: Backing for duo

Joe Cole says John Terry or Rio Ferdiand would be worthy of being named England captain.

Ferdinand and Terry are favourites to land the role when Fabio Capello names his permanent skipper next week.

Cole says whoever is appointed captain will have the full backing of the whole England squad and believes either man would be ideal for the role.

"JT and Rio are both great players, they are both top central defenders and equally both deserving of the captain's armband if they got it as would (Steven) Gerrard, as would (David) Beckham," Cole told Sky Sports News.

"It's not up to me to say my opinion, but I know whoever gets it will have the full support of the lads and of the manager and of the whole country."

Chelsea midfielder Cole says everyone in the England camp is looking forward to the World Cup qualifying campaign as they look to put behind them the misery of missing out on Euro 2008.

Positive

"Everyone's positive again, everyone is looking forward to qualifying for the World Cup and we want to put to bed the last campaign.

"We were not successful and we let people down.

"Now that's finished and now we have got to look forward.

"The fans are pulling in the right direction, the players, the manager, everyone and we can go on and have a successful campaign."
