Michael Johnson's future at Manchester City looks increasingly uncertain after talks over a new contract broke down, skysports.com understands.

Johnson rejected a new contract over the weekend, but talks were continuing between his representatives and the club.

However, talks have now broken off with no agreement and that will alert a host of clubs, with Johnson known to have a string of admirers.

The latest club to show an interest is believed to be Aston Villa, although Everton, Arsenal and Liverpool are also very much in the mix.

The England Under 21 star could now be at the centre of a tug of war just a couple of weeks before the transfer window is due to close.

City's off-field problems would not appear to have helped the situation - but they could now be tempted to cash in on one of their brightest prospects, which may help Mark Hughes bolster other areas of his squad.
