John O'Shea believes he can learn more as a squad player at Manchester United than he would as a first-team regular away from Old Trafford.

The Republic of Ireland international is close to clocking up 300 appearances for Sir Alex Ferguson's side, but despite that impressive tally he has never made a first XI spot his own.

With Owen Hargreaves among the United players ruled out of their opening game of the season against Newcastle on Sunday, live on Sky Sports 1, O'Shea could be called upon.

Challenge

He said: "You could say a game here is worth two elsewhere but it is more than that.

"I want to challenge myself, both in matches and in training every day and I want to improve my game.

"That is why I am here. As long as the manager keeps me as part of the team that will do for me."

O'Shea feels that the desire for more success shown by United's manager and the club's senior professionals drives on everyone at the club.

Rewards

He added: "At this club all you have to do is look across at Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes and see the way they train.

"It is such an example they set. Despite the success they have had and the rewards they have received, they still want more and more.

"It is what the manager prides himself on too.

"You have to learn from these players and want to be like them. That is what this place is all about."
