Keegan: Reasons to be cheerful
Newcastle boss Kevin Keegan has expressed his delight at securing a 1-1 draw with Manchester United.
The Magpies were humiliated 6-0 on their last visit to Old Trafford, but made amends with a gutsy performance in their opening fixture of the 2008/09 campaign.
Obafemi Martins handed the visitors a 22nd minute lead at the Theatre of Dreams, before Darren Fletcher snatched an equaliser two minutes later.
Both sides had chances to take maximum points in the second half, but Keegan was more than happy to leave with a share of the spoils.
"Whatever side Manchester United put out, they're a great side," he told Sky Sports.
"You can't carry anybody here. But if you put in a good performance and have a good attitude you just might get a result. That is what happened, and I thought we deserved the point.
"If we can come here and do that we can do it anywhere."
Keegan also confirmed that he will continue with his efforts to bring new faces to St James' Park, while admitting he was delighted with the performances of his three summer signings to date during the United contest.
"All the players know we need two or three, and I think we'll get them," he added.
"But it's not just about getting players in and putting bodies around the place, they have to be good players, very good players.
"Jonas (Gutierrez) is terrific, (Fabricio) Colocinni has shown his class after just one training session and young (Danny) Guthrie, I had him as my man of the match. "
