Arena: Galaxy job

Los Angeles Galaxy have appointed Bruce Arena as their new head coach following the resignation of Ruud Gullit.

Galaxy moved quickly to name Arena after Gullit surprisingly resigned last week, only nine months into his three-year contract.

And Tim Leiweke, president of Galaxy owners AEG, is hopeful Arena can replicate the success he enjoyed at DC United, where he won two MLS Cups.

Arena also coached USA to the quarter-finals of the 2002 World Cup, the same stage as England and new club colleague David Beckham, and Leiweke is eager to benefit from that experience.

Difficult

Leiweke said: "While it has been a very difficult week, I believe the end result is a very positive step forward for the Galaxy.

"Bruce is the best coach for the Galaxy and certainly one of the best coaches in the history of the league.

"I am impressed with his passion, desire and focus and believe that his recent experiences with the US national team and (New York) Red Bulls have prepared and motivated him for this next challenge."

And Arena is looking forward to the challenge of improving the fortunes of Galaxy, who are without a win in eight games.

"I am very excited to assume this position with the Los Angeles Galaxy," he said.
