Scolari: Surprised

Luiz Felipe Scolari has admitted he was surprised to learn of Brian Barwick's departure from the Football Association.

Barwick announced on Wednesday that he would be standing down as chief executive of the FA at the end of the year.

His time in the job has been analysed over the last couple of days, including the attempt to appoint Scolari as England manager in 2006.

Scolari, now in charge of Chelsea, has previously been quoted as saying he would have taken the role had it not been for the FA's impatience.

But the Brazilian insists he had a good relationship with Barwick and was shocked to hear that he would be moving on.

"I am surprised. I like him. I have met him three or four times and he is a good man," Scolari said on Sky Sports News.

"I like his style, I like his personality and I don't know what has happened, but I wish him good things."

Impossible

Scolari also maintains that Barwick could have done nothing more to convince him to become Sven Goran Eriksson's successor two years ago.

"At that time, maybe the federation had some problems to take me because I was with Portugal," he explained.

"It was impossible at that time to sign two contracts.

"We tried but it was impossible.

"After this, I followed my life with the national team and he followed his life."

Drogba boost

Meanwhile, Scolari has played down fears that Didier Drogba could be sidelined for some time.

The Chelsea striker underwent knee surgery earlier in the year and missed the club's pre-season campaign.

Ivory Coast boss Vahid Halilhodzic revealed earlier this week that Drogba may not be fit to return until October, but Scolari expects him back soon.

The Chelsea manager believes he could even feature against Tottenham on 31st August.

"Drogba is better. He has been working every day with the fitness coach," said Scolari.

"I think next Sunday it would be difficult for him but maybe against Tottenham he could play 30 to 45 minutes."
