Pavlyuchenko: Backed by Woodgate

Tottenham Hotspur defender Jonathan Woodgate is sure Roman Pavlyuchenko would prove to be a 'great' signing at White Hart Lane.

It is claimed that Spurs are on the verge of securing the Spartak Moscow striker, amid reports he arrived in London on Friday.

Woodgate believes the Russian would be an excellent acquisition to the squad, should manager Juande Ramos tie up the deal before the close of the transfer window on 1st September.

The centre-back said on Sky Sports News: "Pavlyuchenko is a top player. I watched him at Euro 2008 and he was excellent.

"He would be a great signing for this club, we have a lot top players here and hopefully he would add to that.

"He would get a lot of goals. He is a tremendous player who is good in the air and with is feet."

Dimitar Berbatov's future at Tottenham remains in doubt, and Woodgate admits he is unsure if the Bulgarian will stay at the club.

Woodgate added: "He is a top player and you need to keep as many players as you can. But this is football and if a price comes in that is worthy then they might let him go."
