Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has refused to blame Paul Scholes for his side's defeat in the Uefa Super Cup.

Uefa Cup holders Zenit St Petersburg triumphed 2-1 in Monaco on Friday as goals from Pavel Pogrebnyak and Danny could only be answered by Nemanja Vidic.

United, who won the UEFA Champions League last season, were pushing for a late equaliser but Scholes received a second booking as he used his hand to guide a cross into the back of the net.

Ferguson, though, insists Scholes' dismissal was the result of a reflex action and that the midfielder is not responsible for United's defeat.

"The sending off was unfortunate," Ferguson told Sky Sports News. "It was an instinctive thing.

"Having already been booked, he had to go.

"It was a good open game, both teams put a lot of work into it and we congratulate Zenit on their victory."

Meanwhile, Ferguson has declined to comment on the possible arrival of Tottenham striker Dimitar Berbatov.

Speculation has increased that the Bulgarian international is set to complete a £30million move to Old Trafford following Louis Saha's switch to Everton.

However, Ferguson claims he is unaware of any developments in negotiations.

"I can't tell you because I've been with the team," added Ferguson when asked about Berbatov.

"I don't know what has gone on. That's all I've got to say."
