Defoe: On fire

Portsmouth striker Jermain Defoe has said he is ready to spearhead England's attack in the World Cup qualifiers.

The 25-year-old destroyed Everton in Pompey's first win of the season with a brilliant brace and an assist in the 3-0 hammering at Goodison Park.

Despite not scoring since March, the quick-footed forward's double should have impressed England boss Fabio Capello, putting him in contention to feature in the crucial 2010 qualifiers against Andorra and Croatia.

"Obviously England was at the back of my mind because they are two important games," he said.

"I just want to be a part of it because it's great to play for your country.

"It's all about confidence and I felt great against Everton, so hopefully I will make the England team."

The bid to qualify for the 2010 World Cup begins with a trip to minnows Andorra on 6th September, before a tough tie against Croatia in Zagreb four days later.

With lingering concerns over Michael Owen's fitness and Wayne Rooney's form, in-form Defoe could be Capello's perfect choice to help send the national side on their way to the major tournament in South Africa.
