Paterson: In fine form at present
Burnley boss Owen Coyle is tipping Martin Paterson to become an integral part of the Northern Ireland setup.
The 21-year-old had been on the fringes of the international fold for some time prior to his summer switch to Turf Moor.
Since joining the Clarets from Scunthorpe he has scored seven goals in 13 appearances, instantly endearing himself to the Burnley faithful.
His fine form has put him firmly in contention for a starting role in Northern Ireland's upcoming 2010 World Cup qualifying double-header against Slovenia and San Marino.
His manager at club level certainly believes the young striker deserves to be handed an opportunity to shine on the world stage.
Coyle said: "Prior to this season Martin had been in the Northern Ireland squad but was never really classed as a first pick.
"But I think he has shown of late in the qualifiers that he is in there pitching to start games. That augurs well for him and this club.
"What we hope when our players go away on international breaks is that they do their countries proud, but equally come back injury-free."
Coyle has also been impressed by Paterson's attitude during the short time the youngster has spent under his guidance.
"Apart from the goals, his work ethic is incredible for such a young man," he added.
"He's hungry, even on the training ground, and desperate to improve and do well.
"Goalscorers are prized assets and they are the ones that people look to and try and get on board. We brought him on here, not with the aim of losing him quickly, but to try and improve our club."
