Terry: May be rested

John Terry remains a doubt for England ahead of their weekend showdown with Kazakhstan.

The national skipper was able to take part in training on Wednesday, after sitting out Tuesday's session with a back complaint, but was unable to complete the routine.

The England medical staff will now continue to monitor the Chelsea defender's fitness in the build up to Saturday's 2010 World Cup qualifier.

Fabio Capello has a ready-made replacement to inherit the armband should Terry miss out, with Manchester United centre-half Rio Ferdinand set to fill the void.

The Italian also has plenty of defensive cover at his disposal with Joleon Lescott, Wes Brown and Matthew Upson all vying for a starting spot.

Terry is unlikely to give up his place without a fight but Capello may decide to keep the combative defender fresh for Wednesday's trip to Belarus.

Meanwhile, Wigan striker Emile Heskey was unable to train on Wednesday due to a back injury, with his fellow front-man Jermain Defoe suffering with a similar problem.

However, both men are expected to rejoin the fold on Thursday and will be hoping to play some part in a scheduled practice match.
