Smith: Support

Scottish Football Association chief executive Gordon Smith has confirmed his support for George Burley by assuring him his job is safe.

Whilst a defeat to Norway at Hampden on Saturday in their World Cup qualifier could deal a blow to Scotland's hopes, Smith has backed Burley regardless of the outcome of the game.

"Anything less than a win against Norway and our chances of qualification are doubtful," he said.

"There's a big psychological factor at stake in this game. The next match we have is against Holland, and that's five months away. A win on Saturday is crucial under those circumstances.

No threat

"But it would be wrong to judge George on the strength of one match at the weekend.

"His position as national team manager is not under any threat at all."
