John Terry will miss England's clash with Kazakhstan on Saturday after sitting out training again on Friday.

The Chelsea skipper has been hampered by a back problem and was widely expected to be forced to relinquish the captaincy for Saturday's World Cup Group 6 qualifier.

Rio Ferdinand will lead Fabio Capello's side at Wembley with Joleon Lescott, Matthew Upson and Wes Brown in contention to replace Terry in central defence.

It is hoped that additional rest will enable the inspirational centre-back to be fit for Wednesday's tougher trip to Belarus.

Terry suffered the problem in Chelsea's UEFA Champions League draw away to CFR Cluj, but recovered sufficiently to take his place in Luiz Felipe Scolari's side against Aston Villa last Sunday.

He attempted to join his international team-mates on the training field earlier in the week, but was immediately forced out of the action for further treatment.

Capello must now decide who to bring in alongside Manchester United star Ferdinand.

Everton's Lescott started against Andorra earlier in the qualifying campaign, but was not even on the bench against Croatia when Ferdinand returned to the starting XI and West Ham defender Upson was named among the substitutes.

Brown, who has been operating at right-back under Capello, could move inside to partner his club colleague, which would see Portsmouth full-back Glen Johnson come into the side in his place.
