Previous Ballon d'Or winner Kaka is tipping Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo to land this year's accolade.

Ronaldo is the clear favourite to scoop the award after his stunning Premier League and UEFA Champions League winning 2007/08 term at Old Trafford.

AC Milan forward Kaka was named among the 30 contenders for the European Footballer of the Year award but feels Ronaldo, who scored 42 goals in all competitions last term, merits the honour.

Kaka, who won the award in 2007, said: "I am realistic. This one won't be for me. It's a shame, but it's logical. AC Milan did not have a good season.

"My favourite is Cristiano Ronaldo. He won two major titles with Manchester, and he scored a lot of goals."

Barcelona playmaker Lionel Messi is also among the leading candidates to receive France Football magazine's prize after a string of dazzling displays at Camp Nou.

Of the Argentine, Kaka said: "He is the kind of player I really like. Like Cristiano Ronaldo, he dribbles, he scores. Messi often does it all on his own."
