Rooney: Helped sink Celtic

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has heaped praise on Wayne Rooney in the wake of Tuesday's victory over Celtic but insists the striker can improve.

Dimitar Berbatov netted a brace, while Rooney weighed in with a third as the Bhoys were dispatched at Old Trafford in Group E of the UEFA Champions League.

Rooney's strike against the SPL champions took his personal tally to nine goals in seven games for club and country, and Ferguson believes there is more to come.

The United boss believes the 22-year-old forward can now emulate team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo, who netted 42 goals in all competitions last season to leave him in pole position to land the European Footballer of the Year award.

"Wayne is capable of getting to that level," said Ferguson.

"Both him and Cristiano were teenagers when they came to us but their progress has been fantastic.

"The only reason we are not talking about Wayne at the same level as Cristiano is the fact one of them scored 42 goals last season. That is why Cristiano should win the Balon D'Or.

"If Wayne can get to that sort of level, he is there."
