Harry Redknapp has backed Les Ferdinand to be successful in his coaching role with Tottenham.

Redknapp has assembled his own backroom team since taking charge at White Hart Lane and has given jobs to former Spurs players Ferdinand and Tim Sherwood.

Ferdinand will work with the strikers and Redknapp expects him to be able to pass on a lot of helpful tips.

"He was a terrific player and can come in and work with the strikers," Redknapp said in the Daily Star.

"Everyone loves him here. He's got something to offer. He's done his coaching badges, so why not get these boys involved.

"He knows more about making space in the box and pulling away than anyone."

American style

Redknapp has studied the coaching style in American football and believes Tottenham can flourish by adopting a similar approach.

He explained: "In this country we often spend too much time as a group, with the coach looking at the whole thing.

"You need to do more individual work with people on their game.

"Look at American football. They have specialised coaches. We only have that for goalkeepers.

"Why not have someone who can do that with midfielders or strikers."

Campbell praise

Tottenham's forwards have been in fine form of late, with Darren Bent scoring five goals from his last two starts and Roman Pavlyuchenko and Fraizer Campbell both netting twice in the midweek Carling Cup win over Liverpool.

Redknapp has been impressed by on-loan Manchester United striker Campbell and believes all his front men can improve with Ferdinand's guidance.

He said: "The movement was good from the strikers against Liverpool. Fraizer Campbell scored his first goals for us since his loan move from Manchester United.

"You can see why Sir Alex turned down £7million from Hull for Fraizer.

"If it goes wrong from now on, I'm going to blame Les."
