Mancienne: Capello call
Chelsea defender Michael Mancienne and Tottenham striker Darren Bent have been named in the England squad to face Germany in Berlin on Wednesday.
Mancienne, who is currently on loan with Championship side Wolves and is yet to make an appearance for the Stamford Bridge club, receives his first call-up to the senior squad after several impressive outings for the Under-21 side.
Bent has been handed his chance to shine in the friendly international after a recent run of good form under Harry Redknapp at White Hart Lane.
Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor has been included along with team-mates Ashley Young and Curtis Davies.
Manchester City defender Micah Richards is selected for the first time by Capello and Eastlands goalkeeper Joe Hart is also included.
As expected, there is no place in the squad for David Beckham, while Newcastle striker Michael Owen continues to be overlooked.
Manchester United duo Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand were ruled out by Sir Alex Ferguson as they are suffering with respective calf and back problems.
England and Chelsea captain John Terry has been included in the 23-man party but is a doubt for the match after suffering a foot injury in the Blues' 3-0 win over West Brom and will undergo a scan on Sunday.
Goalkeepers: Carson, Hart, James.
Defenders: Bridge, Johnson, Davies, Lescott, Terry, Mancienne, Upson, Richards.
Midfielders: Lampard, Gerrard, Wright-Phillips, A Young, Downing, Barry, Carrick.
Strikers: Agbonlahor, Bent, Defoe, Crouch, Walcott.

So Fabio was at Upton Park yesterday but which game was he actually watching? Robert Green was superb once more yet he continues to pick Carson who is regularly shipping goals and making mistakes.

So glad to see Carrick included he is one of the best passers of the ball I've ever seen. Should he play a holding role with the likes of Walcott, Young, Defoe and Agbonlahor making runs with their frightening pace I could see England dominating Germany. I'm unsure of the Mancienne call up, I've watched a few Wolves games this seen, he has been quality but at a different level. Definitely one for the future but is he ready to face Germany?

I'm glad to see these new crop of players being picked. Good to see Owen not get his prima donna england place. World Cup 98 was a long time ago and he needs to replicate that form to get himself back in and for the good of newcastle. Great to see a wolves player - albeit on loan from chelsea - in the england squad. Capello holds a far open playfield for player selection compared to previous england managers though hoddle and venables were not bad.

As a Wolves fan he has been highly impressive since his move to Molineux and been arguably man of the match in all 3 games he has played for us. Certainly one for the future of England and I hope he wants to make the move permanent to get some first team football and can take Wolves to the premier league

i like the fact he doesnt just pick owen on name alone he isnt fit enough at present. i cant understand why wheater hasn been picked he took him all the way to belarus after an under 21 game to sit in the stands and then the next squad he is not in the squad seems a strange decision

Yes, finally! Ashley and gabby have been called up, they have been sensational all season and I would like to think that they will have enough time on the pitch in order to influence the game and push for at least a place in the squad when the qualifiers come around. I have to admit, I am a tad surprised about Curtis's inclusion, but I went up to arsenal yesterday and he really was magnificent. I'm glad joe hart is included, I believe he is our future number 1 and he needs to gain this invaluable experience now. Upson and lescott have been off form completely and I agree with the fellow commenters- that jagielka should have been included. Mancienne I agree with because he really is a prospect, downing I hate, but he did play superbly against us a week ago, and hopefully this youth will be put out, given a long enough time on the pitch to influence play and let the pace and sheer raw talent run riot with a pretty lackluster and rather slow german defence, come on you villa boys! Come on you England! x

Im not just saying this as a wolves fan myself, but mancienne has been quality for us, we will never be able to keep him, and its only a matter of time before he gets his chance with chelsea, if not with them another big club. He was impressive in the u21's against wales, not much gets past him at all, jumps well, clears the lines, and is this new day and age...quick!! The trouble he has, is whats in front of him at chelsea and england, definatly one for the future. Good to see the likes of Hart,Agbonlahor, darren bent in there to, ashe has had a new lease of life at tottenham. As Paul perkins said, its good that he has kept the door open to everyone. I really think that capello knows exactly what he wants from each individual player. Id like to see owen back in there, but needs to get fit, hes a natural goalscorer, people slate him at times, but he is there or there about when the ball is played into the box, 7 out of 10 will go in. I think the future is bright now, if we dont win on wednesday, we dont win, success will come long term and not short term, just get that belief in the team and they will succeed, the youngsters will learn from the senior players. COME ON ENGLAND!!!!

what about the brilliance that is Michael Turner for the mighty tigers? he is a-ten fold beter than upson. although slightly biased i can't be the only england/prem league fan disappointed at his dis-inclusion?

Scott Loveridge (Liverpool fan) says...
I think this squad is brilliant, showing that Capello can and will select anyone English, giving all the players something to play for. Regardless of the squad, or team on the night, I hope we all get behind the team and the manager, and continue on our road to the Finals.

Agree about Carrick...about time!! After all the rhetoric and vitriol about Becks making a selfish assault on Shilton's cap record with "useless 3 minute appearances" just to drive up the numbers, I notice he's not been included. I hope this shuts them all up!!!!

Paul Perkins (Coventry City fan) says...
Although not a massive fan of Capello's appointment, he keeps the door open to everyone which is great to see. Perhaps the previous managers' attitude of 'favourites' is giving way to selection based on merit - form and hard work!

Allan Pearson (Manchester United fan) says...
Great to see some fringe and youth players getting a call up, friendlies should be used as an opportunity to experiment!! Added to that, the experience some of the players will get playing quality opposition and the fact that we should see them really working hard to prove themselves at this level should mean we get an England team showing passion in a friendly (Not something the seniors are renowned for in friendlies). Capello has done a great job so far and hopefully we should see the competition for places start increasing which can only be a good thing. Come on England!!!!!

Matt Sale (Blackburn Rovers fan) says...
I can understand Paul Robinson being overlooked, his form is ok, and perhaps it is time to look at younger keepers such as Hart. That said, why is Stephen Warnock not included? He's been playing great and deserves a nod.

Mark Summerfield (Middlesbrough fan) says...
About time that Young and Agbonlahor were included, they have been in impressive form for a long time and have been overlooked so many times. Im glad that Owen has been left out again, simply because he has no fitness and gets in on his name alone. Its good to see that Capello will blood these playes but he must do it in the qualifiers as well, especially when you have the pace on the two villa players.

Adam Batstone (Coventry City fan) says...
Seems a good selection again from Capello and like you say picking players on form. Ashley Young never mind playing brilliant football at the moment has been playing brilliant football for quite a while now and thoroughly deserves his chance. Interesting call up for Mancienne, he's been playing Championship football on loan for the past few seasons but has impressed in the U21's.

Looks an interesting mix from Fabio, nice to see him exploiting and acknowledging the good form of certain U21 players. However i would put a question mark over Downing but i think that this issue may have been raised a couple of times before...

Edzio Roz (Nottingham Forest fan) says...
Interesting selection, there's certainly a hell of a lot of pace in attack now! Nice to see Capello being brave and picking in-form players, unlike his predecessors! Long may it continue!

Chris Squirrell says...
I saw Mancienne play for the under 21's against Wales and he was faultless i have to say but I do wonder about the inclusion of Stuart Downing. He hasn't really hit top form this season. There's no doubt about his talent but I would have thought Capello would at least pick a player on form. I would have liked to have seen Huddlestone in the squad because he has been phenomenal recently for Tottenham
