Stewart Downing believes his performance against Germany on Wednesday has put him firmly in Fabio Capello's thoughts.

The Middlesbrough winger put in an accomplished display in Berlin, with his outing widely acknowledged as his best in an England shirt to date.

He has struggled to make an impact for the national team in the past, being made a scapegoat for lacklustre showings by certain sections of the Three Lions faithful.

However, he has never lost faith in his ability and feels his big chance has finally arrived as Capello is a coach motivated by results, not big names.

"It was my best performance for England so far, but that's only one," the Boro winger said in the wake of the 2-1 midweek success.

Confidence

"I want to keep going. I don't just want to be in the squad, I want to play. If I keep playing well, then, hopefully, the manager will keep playing me.

"I haven't always been given the chance at international level, but Fabio has given me more of a chance.

"If you do well under him, you have the confidence he will stick with you.

"It's not all about names or whatever, it's about performances. If you are not playing well for your club, then you won't be picked.

"Hopefully we have given the manager a few problems."
