Manchester City manager Mark Hughes has settled City fans' nerves ahead of the derby by insisting that Robinho should make a swift recovery from an ankle injury.

The Brazilian was substituted in the second half of City's 3-0 home win over turbulent Arsenal.

The 24-year-old rounded Arsenal keeper Manuel Almunia but as his shot was cleared off the line he fell awkwardly on his ankle.

Before his withdrawal Robinho wowed the Eastlands crowd with his eighth Premier League goal of the season when, through on goal, he scooped the ball over the head of the advancing Almunia to put City 2-0 up.

Recovery

Hughes said: "Hopefully it is not going to compromise Robinho too long. He has gone over on his ankle.

"It is one of those things that hurts immediately for 30 seconds then calms down quickly. We do not think there is any long-term damage."

Midfielder Stephen Ireland had put City into the lead when he capitalised on a mistake between Arsenal defenders Gael Clichy and Mikael Silvestre just before the break and Hughes was again impressed with the Irishman.

He said: "Given the energy Stephen has and the timing of his runs it would not surprise me if he gets into double figures.

"He has that drive and purpose to his play. He is having an exceptional season and the key is for him to stay consistent. There is no reason why he can't do that."
