Rooney: Looking for goals

Wayne Rooney is confident Manchester United can rediscover their killer instinct in front of goal, starting with Sunday's derby.

Despite dominating for large periods against Villarreal on Tuesday night United were unable to find the back of the net as they progressed into the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League.

It was the second game running that Sir Alex Ferguson's side have failed to score following their 0-0 draw at Aston Villa on Saturday and concerns have been raised.

Manchester City did the double over the European champions last season as well, but Rooney remains unconcerned by his and the team's current failings.

Belief

Rooney told MUTV: "It's not worrying. Although we didn't win the game we're still pleased because we're through.

"I hope we're saving the goals for Manchester City. The derby at the weekend is a big game for us and we're all looking forward to it.

"I'm not quite sure the draw with Villarreal was one for the spectators, but we were probably the better team and we created lots of chances. We just couldn't take them.

"I don't know why we keeping drawing 0-0. They defended well and they're not all that enthusiastic to win the game, so that makes it more difficult for us."

Cristiano Ronaldo again came in for some rough treatment from the opposition, including a reckless knee high foul from Joan Capdevilla that warranted the red card it received.

That incident heightened the abuse the Portugal winger received from the El Madrigal crowd, but Rooney is backing his team-mate to continue to let his feet do the talking.

"He's a high-profile player and wherever he goes he is always going to get this kind of treatment," Rooney added. "But he's big enough to deal with it."
