Wigan Athletic manager Steve Bruce must sell before he buys if he intends to bring in new recruits in the January transfer window.

Bruce has made no secret of the fact that he wants to bolster his squad with a few new faces but his chairman Dave Whelan has warned him he must raise the funds.

Whelan is keen to balance the books and keep the wage bill under control, but Bruce is determined to bring a new striker to the JJB.

"Steve has been a remarkable manager for us," Whelan told the Wigan Evening Post.

"He's always looking for something else and something new, but what he wants is usually the right thing and I'll back him when and where I can.

"If he wants to buy somebody, he'll have to move somebody out because we have a limit and a salary cap to keep, so we'll see what he wants to do."
