Ferguson: Surprised by Keane's departure
Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted he is surprised by Roy Keane's departure from Sunderland.
The former United captain resigned as Sunderland manager on Thursday after just over two years in the job.
Ferguson was expecting to come up against Keane as United prepare to face Sunderland this weekend, but the Black Cats travel to Old Trafford without a manager.
The United supremo admits Keane's loss is a blow to the Premier League and he is unsure if the Irishman will return to management.
"I am surprised," said Ferguson.
"Trying to cut through rumour and fact in football today is difficult.
"You are never quite sure what has happened and the rumour mill is operating at 100 miles an hour.
"But Roy was a great player here and it is a pity. We wish him well."
Ferguson added: "It is difficult to say whether he will be back.
"He is an incredibly controversial character. Every week he always had something to say about the game. He was the same as a player.
"He is such an interesting character and did a decent job up there."
