Derby County chairman Adam Pearson has confirmed that Nigel Clough is one candidate for the manager's role at Pride Park.

Clough is currently in charge of Blue Square Premier leaders Burton Albion but he has been linked with the vacant position with the Rams.

Clough, whose father Brian managed Derby for six years, has no experience of coaching in the Football League but has had success with Burton over the last decade.

Pearson has narrowed down his search for a successor to Paul Jewell and has held talks with Burton chairman Ben Robinson regarding Clough.

"Nigel has definitely been on our horizon but there are a number of other candidates. The list is short now," Pearson told Sky Sports News.

"I have spoken to Ben Robinson about Nigel but I do speak to him every week because of the close connection between the two clubs.

"It has not gone any further than that at this stage and certainty there are other candidates still left in the picture."

Hutchings

Chris Hutchings took caretaker charge of the Rams following Jewell's resignation and Pearson admits he is also being considered.

"Chris came through a very tricky tie at Forest Green admirably on Saturday," Pearson said of the 4-3 FA Cup victory.

"He prepared the team well and the training ground seems buoyant, so just by that work alone he has put himself in the frame."

Pearson hopes to have a manager in place by the weekend, adding: "There is a possibility. In an ideal scenario I would like to have the permanent position nailed down as quickly as possible.

"This is a big club which needs to start winning league games. And we desperately need some stability in a management position."
