Wolverhampton Wanderers have opened talks with Matt Jarvis over a new contract at Molineux.

Midfielder Jarvis' current deal runs out in the summer, but the Championship leaders have an option in place to extend it for a further 12 months.

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy plans to exercise that clause and is eager to offer the former Gillingham man a longer deal.

Jarvis made an impressive start to the season before suffering a torn hamstring at the end of September which kept him on the sidelines until early December.

Negotiations

McCarthy told the club's official website: "We're in negotiations with Matt. His option will be taken up that's for sure.

"We'll be sitting down to discuss it with him and his agent.

"Jarvo is another one who loves it here, he wants to be in the first team and he's like the rest of us - he wants to get to the Premier League.

"As I said last week, players should want to stay here to win something and get this club somewhere by winning something.

"They should want us to get there as a team and play a part in us staying there in the Premier League for the team they're playing for now.

"They're all focused on wanting to get promoted and at the moment, they're all giving us a really good chance of achieving it."
