James Beattie is hoping to fire Stoke City to Premier League safety after completing his move to the Britannia Stadium.

The striker has signed a two-and-a-half year contract to join Stoke from Sheffield United in a deal which could eventually rise to £3.5million.

After 18 months in the Championship, Beattie is delighted to have the opportunity to play in the top flight again and is looking forward to the challenge at Stoke.

"I'm delighted to have signed for Stoke City," Beattie told the club's official website.

High expectations

"I've been brought up to score goals. The gaffer has been great with me, outlining what he wants me to do and what my role will be within the team.

"I'm definitely ready to give the Premier League another crack and I'm delighted with the opportunity.

"Stoke City have given me that and hopefully I can show the fans what I can do straight away.

"Hopefully I can help the club stay up, it's what I've come here to do. If the club didn't have high expectations of staying up I wouldn't have signed.

"We know the situation the club is in and I'm prepared to roll my sleeves up and fight like every one else."

After scoring 34 goals in 65 appearances for the Blades, Beattie acknowledged there was a sense of sadness at leaving Bramall Lane.

He added: "I'm slightly disappointed to leave Sheffield United. I had 18 great months there and really enjoyed it.

"I face a new challenge now coming to Stoke City. I'm delighted to be here. I can't wait to get my boots at training and start preparing for the games to come.

"I'm very thankful to Stoke for giving me the opportunity to play in the Premier League again and pit my wits against some of the top teams in Europe."
